About this expansion
Base is the original English Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion released in January 1999 as the first set in the Base series. It established the core card types and mechanics used in the TCG—Basic and Evolution Pokémon, Energy, and Trainer cards—and contains early holographic chase cards such as Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur. Players use Base cards to build early-style or vintage-themed decks and collectors seek the set for completion, nostalgia, and the original holographic and first-print variants.
